Karen Musey

Hi there!
Karen here. {Insert quippy, slightly dry thing about blah blah blah. }
I am a multi hyphenate many things. I love learning! When curiosity calls, I follow her.
I grew up in Edmonton and Winnipeg and trained under scholarship at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Professional Division and Edge PAC (Los Angeles). I've performed around the world (World Premiere of Wagner Ring Cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen / Toronto, Phish NYE Concerts at Madison Square Garden / New York, West Side Story, Chicago, Joseph / Winnipeg, Canada Winter Games / New Brunswick, Young American Tours / England & Germany, Caillou Tours / US & Korea, Jean Ann Ryan / Hawai'i ) and have recently called both Los Angeles and New York home.
I’ve had a spiraling path, for sure!
In addition to being a performer, I am a writer, ABT® Certified Ballet Teacher, GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® Trainer, Animal and Usui Reiki Master.
When I was a young dancer starting out, I was dropped in a lift and sustained a neck injury. I thought I bounced back - I continued to dance and perform for many years after until a chance audition in New York where I experienced full on vertigo. My body was telling me that I needed to take a step back and heal.
For a number of years I stopped dancing. I thought I was done. I pursued acting, improv, clown, stand up - you name it.
I dove into things that scared the crap out of me. After knowing myself really only as a dancer, stepping outside of that psyche to try new things was both disorienting and freeing.
I moved to Los Angeles. I also started listening better to my body and what she needed and found Feldenkrais, the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, Linklater, Alexander Technique and more. Bit by bit I healed. I helped hold space for others to heal from injuries as well.
I spent a number of years hiking barefoot through Griffith and watching the hummingbirds and bats; was on the SAG Nominating Committee for Film and heard industry greats share their process in creating; auditioned for cartoon voiceover. In general, I explored what the wild west wanted to show me. I had the fantastic opportunity to join Dropout and College Humor in a fun tv series as a cranky crab and I was offered my first Shakespeare play as the title role when they suddenly needed a replacement; nothing like diving into the play with two weeks of rehearsal! It was magic.
I moved back to New York shortly after the tri director / writer / actor strike and found that surprise surprise, my body had healed to be able to dive back into it all. What a gift!
In my explorations to follow my creative spark I have dipped into glass blowing - which remarkably feels a lot like dance - everyone flows and moves as a team to create a masterpiece that is both yin and firey in nature. I co-taught a movement / glass class at Urban Glass in Brooklyn. I felt called to continue to expand my Reiki support for myself and my community and have completed Animal Reiki Masters and began into Kid Reiki. During my Animal Reiki Master course I was guided to connect with horse and leopard energy; I found a stable in the Bronx to learn how to ride horseback, and had the wild and beautiful opportunity to offer a snow leopard some reiki.
I am published in (the International) Reiki News Magazine, Huff Post, 4dancers and am continuing with writing and teaching projects as I also audition and perform alongside.
